Sticky Notes

Kait Walsh

Gertie and Lou shared everything.

Favorite songs, cinnamon sugar sandwiches, a bedtime routine.

Every night they sketched, colored, cut, taped and bedazzled their day.

“For when we are grown-ups,” Lou would say.

“So we never forget,” Gertie would reply.

And every night, just after Lou fell asleep…

Gertie would take out their sticky notes and write down every single thing in her brain, especially her worries.

Usually writing them down helped.

Usually writing them down put her to sleep.

Usually.

But the next morning when they woke up…

Gertie found herself covered in sticky notes.

At first, Gertie tried to hide them.

Lou looked at her sister.

“Ummmm, Gertie? You have something on you.”

Gertie pretended it was no big deal.

“Oh these. These are totally fine.”

“They don’t look fine,” said Lou.

But Gertie couldn’t hear Lou or see her. All she could feel was every single sticky note.

Gertie was stuck.

“Gertie, I’m right here,” Lou said as she gently lifted one then two.

Gertie sighed.

“No Lou, there are too many.”

“But Gertie, I don’t have any. I can hold some.”

Lou placed a couple here and a couple there

And a whole bunch all over her hair.

“You look pretty funny,” Gertie said.

“So do you,” said Lou.

That night, Lou played them their favorite songs, made them cinnamon sugar sandwiches (this time with extra cinnamon)

And when it came time for bed, they gathered their worries along with their supplies.

They sketched, colored, cut and bedazzled their day.

And just as Lou fell asleep…

Gertie did too.
